Fixing or removing a listing

Most problems are fixed by claiming. If you would rather the listing were gone, here is exactly how that works and what happens after.

If you are here because a listing for your business is wrong, or because you did not expect to find your business here at all, this article is for you. Both situations are common, both have a clear path, and neither needs an argument.

The quick answer

  • To fix it yourself: claim the listing. Every field a pet parent sees is then yours to edit.
  • To have us fix it: use Report a problem with this listing at the bottom of the listing page, or the contact form with the business name and the link to the listing page (both required, so we can find the listing in seconds). A person replies, usually within two business days.
  • To have it removed: ask through the same form and confirm you speak for the business, by an email on your website's domain, a code read to the listing's phone number, or a manual review in which we call the number on the listing. Then the listing is delisted, disappears from search at once and from its page and city pages within 24 hours, and is never re-imported.

Why your business is listed

GroomLocator lists grooming businesses from public business information: the name, address, phone number, category, hours and rating that any pet parent can see on a map search. That is the same source every business directory works from, and publishing it is lawful. We use it so that a pet parent looking for a groomer in your town finds you even before you have heard of us.

An imported listing shows only those public facts. It has no photos, no description and no prices until the owner adds them, and it says so on the page. It also carries a "Claim it free" link, because the point of the listing is for you to take it over.

Fixing a listing that is wrong

If it is your business, claiming is the fix. Once approved, the Profile page lets you change the name, phone, email, website, address, city and state, and the other pages cover hours, services, photos and service area. Anything the import got wrong is yours to correct, and later data sweeps never overwrite what an owner has saved. Claim your listing walks through it, including what to do if the phone number on the listing is wrong and the phone check cannot reach you.

If you cannot or would rather not claim, send a correction. At the bottom of every listing page is Report a problem with this listing, which opens the contact form with the listing name and link already filled in. Tell us what is wrong and what it should say. Common corrections we make on request:

  • A wrong phone number, address or website.
  • A business that has closed or moved.
  • A listing that is not a grooming business (a clinic, a supply store, a trainer). Those come off; the directory is for grooming.
  • Two listings for the same business.
  • A listing marked as a salon that is mobile, or the reverse.

We check the public information and make the change. Corrections do not need proof of ownership because they do not give anyone control of the listing.

Removing a listing

You can have your business's listing removed. We ask one thing first: that you show you speak for the business. Without that, anyone could remove a competitor, and a removal cannot be undone by a data sweep.

The proof is the same as for a claim, and you choose whichever is easiest:

  1. Email from your website's domain. Write to us from an address on the same domain as the website on the listing. If the listing shows groomsofthunder.com, an email from thor@groomsofthunder.com settles it. Shared providers like Gmail do not count.
  2. A code read to the listing's phone number. Start a claim on the listing and use Call me now on the review page; we call the number on the listing and read a six-digit code. Enter it, then reply to the claim email asking for removal instead.
  3. Manual review. Ask for removal through the contact form with the business name and the link to the listing page; a request that names no listing cannot be acted on. We call the phone number on the listing, the one the public sees, and confirm with whoever answers for the business. This takes a little longer, usually within two business days.

Once confirmed, we delist the listing and reply to say so.

What happens after removal

  • Search: the listing stops appearing immediately.
  • Its page and the city and state pages: gone within 24 hours, which is how long those pages are cached.
  • Our sitemap: the address is dropped the next time the sitemap is generated. Google and other search engines drop their copy on their own schedule, which can take longer; that part is outside our control.
  • Future data sweeps: the listing is marked as removed and is never re-imported, even though the business still appears in public sources.
  • Claims: nobody can claim a removed listing.

If you had claimed the listing before asking for removal, your dashboard can still see it, so the record of what you added is not lost. If you change your mind, contact us and we can relist it.

Before you remove it

A few owners ask for removal because the listing looked wrong or empty. That is worth a second thought: the listing exists because pet parents in your town search here, and an empty listing sends them to the groomer next to yours whose listing has photos. Claiming takes a few minutes, is free, and puts the page under your control. Add photos and a description and the same page starts working for you.

If you would still rather not be listed, that is fine, and the steps above are how.

Frequently asked questions

Did you get my details from somewhere private?

No. Imported listings carry only the business information that is publicly shown for your business on map searches: name, address, phone, category, hours and rating. No customer data, no private contact details, and no email addresses that were not published by the business itself.

Can you just delete it without the verification step?

Not on request alone, because we cannot tell your request from a competitor's. The email-domain and phone-code checks take a minute or two; the manual review is usually done within two business days.

I removed my listing and it is still on Google.

Google's index of our pages updates on its own schedule after our page is gone; that can take days or weeks and we cannot speed it up. The page itself returns "not found" within 24 hours of removal.

Someone else claimed my listing. What do I do?

Contact us with the listing name, its link and your business phone number. We check who claimed it, and we can move the listing to your account once you have confirmed you speak for the business.
